Treatment of rug edge
Apart from the use of the best materials, the correct treatment of the edges of the canvas foundation will do more than anything else to ensure the long life of a rug, while also adding to its pleasing appearance.
By far the greatest wear and tear comes upon the edges, and if these are not strengthened the tufts of a pile rug soon tend to lie down flat near the edges, and in both pile and smooth-faced rugs the selvedges can disintegrate with startling rapidity.
Bitter personal experience emphasised this as the selvedges of the Dragon rug referred to in the Preamble to this book began to fray after it had been in use for some years and repairing it neatly proved to be a most tiresome job.
