Rugs: canvas
A good half-way house is 7s canvas and when once "bitten" by the fascination of doing a fine rug it is difficult to return to the quicker, coarser canvases although for practical use these are admirable.
It is all a question of temperament—some people will prefer to take three or four years over one piece of fine work while others would rather make three or four rugs in the same time—and both the actual stitches recommended and the suggestions for designing home-made rugs are based on the various preferences of rug makers in general who wish to use their needles.
The ideas for designing apply largely to rugs made with the gauge-hook method also.
