Hooked Rugs
As the plait arrives at the top left-hand corner, the stitch must be "shortened" thus. When "on 3" finishes in the corner hole it should be followed by "back 2", on 2, back 1, on 1, so that the last stitch as well as the first along the edge is a simple cross stitch.
Next the corner should be oversewn as neatly as possible (see below for further details) and the plait started down the selvedge edge, beginning with a simple cross stitch, the first half of which should be made in the direction in which the plait is to be worked.
It is generally advisable to use a greater total thickness of wool in the needle (say three lengths instead of two) when working wide plaits, e.g. the "complete hole" top edge and the complete unfolded selvedges which go with it.
