Preparation of canvas for rugs
Whatever type of canvas is used the cut ends must be dealt with without delay or they will fray, this (as has already been mentioned) being particularly the case with the single mesh jute.
At the end where the rug is to be started the cut edge should be folded over for 2 to 1 inches (1 inch will serve for a sampler) when using canvas having up to 5 holes to the inch, or 1 to 15 inches for finer canvases, and should then be oversewn firmly to the canvas, making sure that each hole in the turn-over lies exactly above the corresponding hole beneath it since the rug is begun through the resulting double thickness of canvas.
