Making a rug
Before starting for the first time on a full-sized rug it is most desirable to practise on a sampler, both in respect of the necessary treatment of the canvas edges and of trying out alternative rug stitches.
A yard of 12 or 18 inch wide double mesh canvas—preferably 5s but failing that 4s—should be enough for three samplers, one of which can in due course be used for the pile stitches described in the next chapter and the otheis for the various flat stitches described in Chapters Five and Six.
Such samplers can serve as a useful book of reference in the future.
