Make rugs and carpets
When working the narrow type of edge the special stitch across the corner helps to hold down the folded selvedge there as well as enabling the point to be more adequately covered.
In order to avoid the somewhat thick edge where the selvedge fold-over meets the fold of the cut end (resulting in four thicknesses of selvedge), a small piece of the selvedge can be cut away where it will be seen to protrude beneath the turn-over, but this must be done with great care and the cut must not be taken right up to the corner.
