Edging stitch in rugs

Next in priority to securing the cut ends comes the consideration of how to cover the edges of the canvas.

There are several possible methods of doing this but of these the plaited edging stitch alone will be described as it has been found by the majority of workers to be the most generally satisfying. There are sound reasons for this preference:

  • It is extremely strong and hard wearing.

  • It is simple to work.

  • It looks well and thus adds to the attractive appearance of the finished rug, although

  • it is not obtrusive and therefore liable to detract from the rug itself.

  • Finally, a great advantage of this stitch is that if, due to accident or long service, the rug shows signs of wear, it is particularly easy to repair.
