Advise on rug making

Before any plait arrives at or is started from a particular corner, put a dab of paint, stain or dye on the corner point of the canvas of the same colour, as nearly as possible, as the wool used for the plait. (Ink is very satisfactory for use with dark blue wool.)

When the paint is dry, and using the same wool as for the intended plait, oversew the canvas edge with simple sloping stitches from a few holes one side of the corner to a few holes the other side, being careful to include one stitch directly over the corner point.

This latter stitch is unlikely to stay in place when the sampler has been handled but it can be pushed back into position and held there while it is being oversewn by the plait in due course.
