About rug making

area rug

The foregoing directions are for a plaited edging stitch worked from right to left, but it is just as easy to do it from left to right. In this case the first half of the first cross is made from left to right, the needle is taken back to the original hole and then continues its journey by going on 3 holes to the right, etc.

When a new length of wool is needed the tail of the old one is brought out at the long stitch (the "on 3" hole) and left loose, the new one is threaded along the back of the worked plait for a short distance and brought out at the same (long stitch) hole, and then the plait is continued as before.

The loose tail of the old length is carried along the top of the canvas until it is covered, and it should be impossible to tell where the join has been made if these directions are carried out carefully and no difference made in the tension of the plait.
